Wilfrid SheedA great book but written about 6 months too early. By the
time of publication in early 1975, Sheed mentions that there are cracks
in the Ali façade and that either Foreman, Norton or Frazier will get
him one of these days. I think he wanted to get it in print before a
loss to one of those three tarnished the Ali legend. It was published
just before Manila and before Ali lingered on through 3 lackluster
years, his punch gone, eking out questionable decisions over fighters he
would have destroyed 10 years earlier. As a book of photographs, it is
a beautiful work catching Ali almost at his peak. As a book of
worship, it's too bad it came before his epic act of survival against
Frazier in their third fight. That would have made a great last
chapter.
